The Farley Bar's deck is one of Marin's most popular for its stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco and the perfect place to start off your girl's weekend with a catch-up. Or if it happens to be a fog-whipped day, sitting inside by the fire is extra-sweet. Savor some umami fries (that porcini dust!) and a glass of wine from the Wine Spectator Grand award-winning list; stay for a hearty meal of vegetable pot pie or tamari-glazed black cod.

Cavallo Point Lodge & Spa

Look around Cavallo Point today and you’d be forgiven for likening the extensive horseshoe-shaped compound to one of the Adirondack resorts renowned for Dirty Dancing-style revelry; perfect for an overnight with the girls. But in fact this enclave of isolation directly underneath the Golden Gate Bridge was once Fort Baker, a military installation dating back to 1902. The lodge offers an interesting mix of classes and activities, from cooking school to sunrise yoga sessions. Rooms in the historic officers’ quarters are reminiscent of a Greek revival mansion, with wide front porches and turn-of-the-century woodwork, while rooms in the new wings feature radiant heat floors and plate-glass windows, some with stellar views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Dogs living their best lives frolic on the property’s expansive front lawn and are arguably just as pampered as two-legged guests.

Rodeo Beach to Hill 88 Hike
Email
Copy link
This well-maintained and partially-paved (lower section) trail sits just above Rodeo Beach, where surfers, dog parents and picnickers alike go to enjoy the rather large, yet less-populated sand and sea setting. On a clear day, the top of Hill 88, an important Nike missile radar site during the Cold War, provides sweeping views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge from the west. Listen for seals below and seagulls soaring above. With roughly 1,000 feet of elevation gain, don’t cave before reaching the top; the view of the city through the graffitied frame of a bunker window is something you’ll want to capture. Overall, it’s a lovely place to be on a warm day — there’s almost always a nice breeze, which helps with the lack of shade along the trail. Tip: If you’re going on a weekend, plan to go early to avoid heavy traffic midday — the only road in is a single lane.

Tuck into some sustenance or at least up your drink with dinner at the Barrel House. You and your friends will be rising above it all (it's on the second floor) where the soaring ceiling work reflects the restaurant's name. The barrel-aged cocktails are worth a visit (try the Negroni) but dishes like maitake mushroom flatbread and tartare tacos reflect a locally-focused ethos that is enhanced by the cool setting and fantastic bay and city views.
